Low Impact Development Stormwater System at Singleton Park

Designing a Stormwater Strategy for a New Community Park
In the spring of 2024, Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation broke ground on a new public park in Norcross, Georgia. The 1.58-acre site features a playground, greenway trail access, parking lot, and restroom facilities. The development’s new impervious surfaces increased the volume of stormwater runoff, requiring a carefully engineered solution to manage stormwater detention and meet water quality and low impact development (LID) standards.

Expanding Park Access with Sustainable Infrastructure
Stormwater management for this project was handled by an aboveground bioretention facility and an underground StormTank Module detention system. The StormTank system was designed using 25 Series Modules in a 48-inch tall double-stack configuration installed underneath the parking areas. The StormTank system is AASHTO HS-25 load rated for heavy truck traffic and provides 95%+ void space for stormwater volume detention.
Space-Efficient Stormwater Management that Meets Low impact development and Water Quality Goals
The treatment train of the bioretention facility, combined with the StormTank detention system, satisfied LID, water quality, and channel protection requirements in a compact footprint. The combined system provided:
• Space-saving detention under active parking areas
• Enhanced water quality treatment
• A sustainable, durable stormwater solution that will serve Gwinnett County residents well into the twenty-first century
The StormTank system was installed in July of 2024, providing high-capacity underground stormwater detention without reducing the usable space of the park.
Delivering Environmental and Recreational Value
Singleton Park will serve as a vibrant community hub, offering residents of Norcross and the surrounding areas enhanced recreational opportunities, improved connectivity through its multiuse trail, and a thoughtfully designed green space that promotes environmental sustainability and community well-being.
